Winchester City Flyers Tournament 2018
Posted by Mark Hickson on 11 September 2018
Over the past weekend the Club hosted its annual tournament to brilliant success. This year the tournament had an extra special dimension to it, as it saw the first use of the newly developed King George V Pitches. This was a huge moment for all those who have worked so hard to get to this point, as the Club and the League transition from the Garrison Ground in the wake of plans for the new leisure centre development that will occur there. The process has involved many people and within the Club our huge thanks must go to Allan and Adee, who have worked tirelessly alongside the council to make this development possible.
King George has seen vast improvements in a very short space of time, with both 11-a-side and 9-a-side pitches added, complete with new goals and pitch markings, the implementation of a groundsman, massively increased standard of pitch quality, refurbishment of the clubhouse and the building of new parking facilities. All of this work was put on show in the best way over the weekend as over 1000 girls took part in the tournament, with some age groups having up to 18 teams involved! On Sunday morning there was a celebration to signify this work with Cllr Lisa Griffiths, the Mayor of Winchester and former Southampton FC and England player Mick Channon all present. Micks grand-daughter Evie is part of the Flyers family and even captained the Under 14 side to victory in the tournament on Sunday!
In terms of the competitive nature of the tournament Flyers had a brilliant weekend. Not only did they have a record breaking 22 teams playing from Under 8 to Under 18, they were also the winners in 3 of the age groups (Under 11, Under 14 and Under 16), the runners up in 6 of the competitions (Under 8, Under 9, Under 10, Under 12, Under 15 and Under 18) as well as making both quarter and semi finals across the two days!
