Flyers support for NHS Covid-19 fight

Winchester City Flyers have many parents, players, and volunteers working for the NHS during these difficult times. We want to say our big thank you by raising some funds for the Acute Medical Unit (McGill Ward) at Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. I know many others are working in the healthcare system around Hampshire, and thank you

If each of our youth players can do some jobs at home and send in a £5 we could easily reach £2,000. Please send in a photo to the club of the players doing their fund raising. If parents, grandparents, volunteers or friends could also contribute that would be great, and we could bust the target. Please share.

Football Coaching 4 Girls

Following the success of the Wildcat centres in Hampshire, Hampshire FA have now launched a new coaching school here in Winchester that is exclusively for young girls. This is to continue the brilliant momentum created by Wildcat centres so that young girls still have access to football across the winter months.

The sessions are designed for girls between the ages of 3-10 and are for all abilities. This includes girls who have never played football before or for those who are already part of a team at Flyers and are wanting extra football!

A special aspect to Football Coaching 4 Girls is that all their coaches are female. This allows for specialist coaching, as the coaches have been part of the female game, whilst also giving the girls role models within the sport.

Sessions are held at River Park from 4:30-5:30pm on Tuesday evenings. To book onto one please head over to the Football Coaching 4 Girls website.

Parking: All who are attending the tournament must park at the Park and Ride facilities unless you are a blue badge holder. The two car parks are located at St Catherines Park and Ride, Winchester, SO23 and Barfield Close, Winchester, SO23 9SQ. Please follow the signs from these car parks to King George V playing fields, which are located at the end of Milland Road, SO23 0QA (beyond Winchester Sports Stadium and Athletics track). There is a labeled pathway across the old Garrison Ground (which is now a building site) that is located off of the B3404 (Bar End Road) opposite the Winchester Service Station, this will be the quickest way to walk from the Park and Rides to the King George pitches.

Food: Flyers are pleased to offer vegetarian and vegan burgers at their bbq this year! Just ask when you are being served and we will provide you with the alternative options.

Ladies First Team Announcement

We are pleased to announce that following a year's sabbatical from the ladies game Tony Panteli is rejoining our ladies First Team management setup.
Joining our already successful team of Haydn & Steve, we hope Tony's wealth of knowledge of the ladies game will help us continue our exciting journey up the ladies football pyramid.

Our ladies pre-season training will commence on Wednesday 19th June and will continue every Wednesday thereafter through the summer.
We will also have a second training session, interspersed with friendlies, every Sunday starting on Sunday 23rd June.
We are training at King George V Playing Fields, Milland Road, Bar End, Winchester.
These are open training sessions and we welcome along all-comers new and old.

Under 18 Harriers Hampshire Cup Final

The Under 18 Harriers traveled to Romsey Town in the hopes of lifting the Hampshire Cup trophy on the evening of the 27th of March. The team had beaten strong opposition in the form of Mudeford and Alderbury to make it to the final, so they were very well prepared for the game. The team they faced were Warsash Wasps, who they had previously drawn 2-2 with in the league two weeks before. Flyers were in for a tight game!

The match began at a frighteningly fast pace, with the ball pinging from one end to the other, but it was Flyers who carved out the first chance. Molly Gatford made a great run in behind and was found by Jess’s through ball, but her powerful shot just went over the bar. Next in behind for Winchester was Armiee, who’s run into the right-hand channel saw her receive the ball from Brianagh and gave her a shooting opportunity, but the Warsash keeper saved well low to her left. After the early flurry of chances for Winchester, Warsash began to get a foothold in the game and played some good passing moves around their midfield. Their best chance of the half came from a break down the right, which resulted in Flyers goalkeeper Lara having to dive down to her left to tip a shot onto the post.

The remainder of the half was a very tight affair, with both sides giving the other little time on the ball. Flyers defensive central midfielder Louise covered the width of the pitch to continually win the ball back and down the Flyers left Charlotte and Molly Williams combined well to stop Warsash attacks and instigate forward play for Flyers. As the half drew to an end Flyers grew into the ascendency, with Jess getting on the ball more and looking for openings and Jenna coming on up front gave Flyers another option going forward, but, as it was, neither team were able to fashion any more clear cut chances and the score remained 0-0 at half time.

The second half was the complete opposite of the first, with 4 goals being scored in 45 minutes! The deadlock was broken early on by Warsash, as a free kick from the edge of the box cannoned off the crossbar and fell down into the danger zone. It was then a Warsash head who met the ball and put the yellows and blacks 1-0 up. Despite this, Flyers were showing more composure on the ball than in the first half and were moving it around nicely. Lucie was finding more space down the right and her pace was causing the opposition problems as she combined well with Armiee and Molly Lowe. One of these moves resulted in a Flyers free kick, which Armiee lifted into the box and the ball found its way to Jenna who turned well to try and force the ball in, but the referee ruled it had touched her arm. On the opposite side, Jodie and Charlotte were running endlessly, tracking up and down the left wing as Flyers pushed for an equaliser. The teams hard work soon paid off as Flyers made it back onto level terms, Frankie broke out of defense and found Catherine on the left, she then cut inside and her low shot managed to bounce past the keeper, 1-1.

As the half progressed there was no let up in the intensity of the game, with Emily coming on for Flyers to pressurise the Warsash defense to great effect. Despite this hard work, it was Warsash who again took the lead, as a fizzing shot from their right was parried well by Lara, but the loose ball fell to the Warsash striker, who finished well into the top right-hand corner. With not a huge amount of time left to play and a goal to score, Flyers went to 3 at the back and pushed captain Meg into central midfield. Following this, Flyers had their most dominant spell of the game, as Warsash tried to hold onto their lead, the team in red and black began to create more shooting opportunities and had a string of corners. The pressure finally paid dividends, as the ball fell to Meg around 25 yards out and her clean strike forced its way past the keeper's hands and into the top right-hand corner of the net, bringing the game back level at 2-2. The last few minutes were a nervy affair, as both teams looked to push on and grab the winner. Winchester had the best of the late opportunities, as Armiee raced in behind, but her shot just bounced wide of the far post.

At the final whistle the score was 2-2, and with no extra time, the game was to be decided by penalties! Flyers had the first spot-kick and scored it, with Armiee coolly slotting the ball into the right-hand corner. Warsash then stepped up and buried their penalty with a brilliant strike. Frankie was next up for Flyers and rolled her penalty under the keeper to keep Winchester’s noses in front. It then became Lara’s time to shine, the Warsash player sent their second penalty in with a stinging shot, but Lara reacted quickly and got her hand to it to send it onto the bar, 2-1 to Flyers. Molly Lowe was the next Flyers penalty taker and she also kept her composure and calmly slotted the penalty home. Warsash’s third penalty was another strong strike, but Lara was equal to it, and having guessed the right way, pushed the ball away to the right to keep it out. So up stepped captain Meg to win it, and even though the keeper got hands to her shot, it had enough power to make it into the bottom corner and give Flyers the victory!!

A bundle ensued as the team ran to celebrate with Meg and Lara, what a way to win it!

The game was an incredible one and a brilliant advert for women’s football, with all you’d want to see in a final. A big thank you goes to Hampshire FA for organising the competition. The game was a poignant one for both sides, as it saw Warsash manager Andrew and Flyers manager Chae play each other for the last time, having competed over the last 10 years, so a big thank you to Warsash for the many years of memories. Lastly a huge congratulations to the whole Flyers squad this evening, as well as injured members Georgia and Sophie who helped them get to the final, and to Molly Steward for coming to support, they have all done the Flyers badge proud.

2019 Wildcats Centre

In 2018 we applied to be a Wildcats center for the first time and were delighted to be accepted. Little did we know the success it would turn out to be with over 50 girls attending more that one session across the 16-week programme. As a result, we were able to create the first ever Winchester City Flyers Under 8 and Under 9 teams, who have both continued to train and play matches throughout the season. Now in 2019, we are hoping to run another brilliant center starting on the 7th of April.

- The sessions will run for 16 weeks

- Each session will cost £3 per child

- For girls aged 6-8, the sessions will be 9-10 am

- For girls aged 9-11, the sessions will be 10:30-11:30 am

- The sessions will be at the River Park Leisure Centre 3G Pitch, Gordon Road, SO23 7DD

Hawks Hampshire Cup Final

Having beaten Andover 5-2 in the semi-final, the Hawks were raring to go against tough opposition in the form of Portsmouth in the Community.

The match was played at Front Lawn in incredibly windy conditions, which sadly impacted the game, but this didn't dampen the girl's spirits as they were excited to get the game started.

The game began with a flurry of goals, as by the 18th-minute mark the score was 2-1 to Portsmouth, with Mae getting on the score sheet for Flyers. The foundation of Flyers success was their midfield strategy of packing the space and covering the wings well to minimize the Portsmouth attacks and with the score staying at 2-1 until half time, Flyers were very much still in the game.

The second half was a more difficult affair for the Flyers team, as they were against the wind. This meant both clearances and passes forward were much harder, but the girls fought all the way through the half brilliantly. In an attempt to get the equaliser Flyers pushed forwards but sadly Portsmouth got stronger as the game progressed and pulled away to a 4-1 lead and held out to keep that as the final score.

Despite the loss, this was a massive achievement for the girls to reach the final and shows the progression they have made as a team. Coach Luke had this to say after the game 'Not the result we all hoped for but an amazing team experience today. The atmosphere in the changing rooms was excellent, the best I have experienced as a coach, the girls were buzzing and there was lots of fun, laughter, and togetherness which was great to see. We will continue to play out our league fixtures and then we will build the squad for next season as we move to 11aside football and hopefully we can go one step further.'
